STONETHROWERS uncovers the overlooked role of women in the 1916 miners’ strike on Serifos, a historic uprising that led to Greece’s eight-hour workday. At its center is Aikaterini Valsamaki, a key yet largely forgotten figure of the Mega Livadi rebellion, imprisoned for her defiance. The film links the women who threw stones at the gendarmes in 1916 to the stonethrowers of contemporary struggles, weaving in the myth of Medusa’s petrifying gaze rooted in Serifos. Through archival footage, interviews with descendants, and digital scans of mines and stones, it traces memory, labor, and resistance. By creating a warning effect, a visceral reminder of the struggles that continue to resurface, the film confronts the persistence of exploitation and oppression. Reframing past and present female defiance through a feminist lens, Stonethrowers reclaims herstory. In an era when labor rights and land are under renewed threat, the film asserts that acts once punished or erased remain revolutionary.
